Sacramento Brain Injury Lawyers

The human brain is the control center for the body. Virtually every type of bodily function, such as movement, hunger, thirst, sleep, thought and breathing, relies on the brain to survive. When the brain is seriously injured, a victim can experience permanent cognitive and sensory disabilities, and even death. Traumatic brain injury, which occurs when an external force injures the brain, is one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. Victims can be exposed to extreme external blunt or penetrating forces in serious accidents, such as a car accident, truck accident, construction accident, slip and fall accident, birthing accident, motorcycle accident, bicycle accident and boating accident. Brain injuries can also be caused by the use of a harmful pharmaceutical, a brutal assault and exposure to toxic chemicals or gases.

The Sacramento personal injury lawyers at Estey Bomberger understand how devastating it can be for victims of traumatic brain injuries. Losing even the smallest, but vital, portion of the brain's capability can inflict serious physical and emotional suffering. We also know how financially stressful it can be to treat a serious brain injury. Some victims may require round-the-clock care for the remainder of their life. Our Sacramento personal injury lawyers offer clients compassionate legal representation, but with an aggressive litigation approach. Contact our law firm to learn how we can help in the fight for justice.

Types of Brain Injuries

Concussion
Concussions are the most common type of brain injury and are caused by a direct blow to the head, either by an object or eternal force. When the brain sustains an impact, the blood vessels in the brain can stretch and cranial nerves can be damaged. Brian damage alters the functioning of the brain, which can cause temporary or permanent memory, balance and coordination issues. Concussion victims can also experience severe headaches, and concentration and judgment problems.

Contusion
A brain contusion is bruising (small blood vessels that leak) of brain tissue. Because brain contusions involve structural brain damage, severe brain contusions are more serious than a concussion. Victims of severe brain contusions can be rendered unconscious and awake feeling tired, emotional and confused. Severe brain contusions can also cause the brain to swell, which can lead to further complications and additional brain damage.

Penetrating brain injury
Unlike a brain injury that is caused by blunt force, a penetrating head injury is caused by an impact from an object. In a penetrating brain injury, or open head injury as they are also called, the brain, scalp and skull are all affected. Depending on the part of the brain that is injured, open head injury survivors may suffer from personality and behavioral changes. It is estimated that almost 50 percent of penetrating head injury patients will experience post-traumatic epilepsy.
